Simple steps towards digitization

If you are familiar with the topic digitalization deal with, you will currently encounter two extremes: On the one hand, there are general events on almost every aspect of the digital evolution, on which the latest trends and technologies are presented and a "Tschakka - We can do it" atmosphere is spread. On the other hand there are impressive ones Product and project presentations ready on glossy foils. Hip startups present both new solutions and systems that have actually been Industry 4.0 for 20 years. It seems like there are more solutions than problems and the real problem is making it easy.

In the end customer area, there is little persuasion in this regard, so this is definitely the right approach. Because as a private customer, in most cases you do not want to deal with setting up your very own streaming service à la Netflix or your own fitness tracking app.

With a few apps to the digital company - that has not worked so far!

But how does it look from a business perspective? There are also some areas in the B2B segment in which standardized products or services can reveal great potential. However, in the business context, the decision for such a service or product is usually associated with a significantly larger investment compared to the end customer. This reason already makes it clear why digitization in the company is a more profound one understanding of technology needed to make good investment decisions.

Thinking further, we also come to situations in which buying a ready-made solution is not the best alternative. It is very likely that you have processes in the company that are extremely individual. There is often no ready-made solution on the market. Your solution approach has certainly developed over a long period of time and may even give you a corresponding competitive advantage. You certainly don't want to kill them with a standard solution just because it's trendy to digitize.

Even with the much-cited possibility of developing new products and business models, it is understandable that in-house development or a combination of Make other Buy is necessary to stand out in the market. The market provides cloud services (e.g. with Siemens MindSphere, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Office 365, etc.), No code or low code platforms (e.g. Microsoft Power Apps & Flow ), but also impressive open source frameworks, like Google's Tensorflow for machine learning, are available as kits rather than finished products.

In summary, you can't do digital transformation only buy, you have to design it yourself.

Between the two extremes, however, there is often a lack of knowledge transfer of the existing know-how into one's own company. Its absence makes it difficult, especially for small and medium-sized companies, to get started with digitization. To quote a quote from an event: "As an SME, where can you find an expert for Tensorflow? And if you find one, do you really want to and can you hire it?”

The consequence: start to understand...

The good news is that modern technologies now provide the tools to develop processes, products and business models yourself and to achieve the corresponding successes. In addition, it is not absolutely necessary to set up an entire digital department. Prerequisites are the right impulses and a knowledge base, both at management and at project team level - not mandatory to do everything yourself, but to understand everything yourself and to be able to make decisions. In addition, those responsible need the freedom to deal with the topic and the corresponding scope for digitization projects.

opportunities

Dealing with digitization issues in the company is not necessarily easy, as close cooperation between the departments with customers, suppliers and partners is required. In addition, it can be expected that the need for strategy and IT experts will increase sharply in the coming years, together with the associated costs for specialized employees. In addition, companies face the challenge of making the best possible selection from a wide range of technology options. For these reasons, training and further education for internal employees and the associated knowledge building are an essential factor in dealing with digital change.

At the same time, there are many opportunities, since processes and products can be better and better supported with the help of IT systems. The needs of internal and external users will change in the coming years and companies now have the opportunity to position themselves in such a way that these needs are met and that they stand out from the competition.

Training enables better and more conscious decisions. Regardless of which technology or technology product you ultimately choose, you should not do so blindfolded.

3000 data points from 15 OPC servers

Our project example describes the successful implementation of an IoT project in which we developed a turnkey solution for a customer to transfer and visualize 3000 data points from 15 OPC servers to an IoT database. We explain the challenges our client had when integrating many different devices and data sources and how we overcame them with our solution. We use mostly proven and secure open source software to store, visualize and transform data and to create tailor-made applications. Our blog describes the process we used to implement the IoT project, from analyzing the requirements to training the customer's employees. The result was a successful project that offers the customer a growing database and creates the basis for further evaluations.
